\"Oranges<\/a>Oranges from Dominic’s Tree<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a selection of poems by Dominican friars, sisters and laity, compiled and introduced by Matthew Powell OP. As explained in the introduction, ‘The title of\u00a0this anthology, Oranges from Dominic’s Tree<\/em>, comes from the tradition that Saint Dominic planted an orange tree in the garden of the Priory of Santa Sabina in Rome. A series of orange trees have grown in that garden for almost nine hundred years, each taken from a shoot of the previous tree. Dominic’s tree still produces oranges.’<\/p>\n

The two following poems are by Paul Murray, who was born in Ireland, and joined the Irish Province in 1966. He has lived in Rome since 1994, where he teaches\u00a0at the University of St Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). He is also the author of\u00a0The New Wine of Dominican Spirituality: A Drink Called Happiness<\/em>.<\/p>\n

THE FIRST WISDOM<\/p>\n

Beautiful<\/p>\n

are the texts of the Masters,<\/p>\n

luminous and practical<\/p>\n

their teaching.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But for me<\/p>\n

more useful still,<\/p>\n

my best-thumbed pages<\/p>\n

of enlightenment<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and the text and title<\/p>\n

of my greatest learning,<\/p>\n

are my own<\/p>\n

faults and failings.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THRESHOLD<\/p>\n

Not at the pointed<\/p>\n

hour of ecstasy<\/p>\n

or at the furthest edge<\/p>\n

of being<\/p>\n

but here, in the even<\/p>\n

close-knit hours<\/p>\n

among the weekday<\/p>\n

goings-on<\/p>\n

of wind and weather,<\/p>\n

here in our hidden threshold<\/p>\n

of perception,<\/p>\n

here we must wait<\/p>\n

until the doors of the present<\/p>\n

swing open<\/p>\n

on new hinges.<\/p>\n
